PE Intent

Pinner Wood School recognises the value of Physical Education (P.E) and fully adheres to the aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities, and lead healthy, active lives. We aim for children to develop fundamental movement skills, becoming increasingly competent and confident, while accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend agility, balance and coordination, both individually and with others.

Pupils are encouraged to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other, while developing a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity. Through PE, children learn how to improve their performance, evaluate their own success, and understand the importance of healthy lifestyles, leaving school with the foundations for a lifelong love of physical activity.

Progression in PE

PE 2.jpg

P.E. is taught at Pinner Wood School as an area of learning in its own right and is also integrated where possible with other curriculum areas, such as active registers and active maths.

All children access two PE sessions per week, alongside additional daily physical activities.

The key knowledge and skills of each topic are carefully mapped across each year group to ensure progression. Children develop their understanding of games, dance and gymnastics, and from Key Stage 2, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Skills are developed systematically, with each year group building on previous learning and preparing children for future stages.

We use the Complete PE scheme to support progression, ensuring lessons enable pupils to apply and develop a broad range of skills, link movements into sequences, and use skills in different contexts. Lessons are inclusive and adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring all children can participate at their own level of development. Children also learn the basic rules of a range of activities, experience positive competition, and develop good sporting attitudes in a safe and supportive environment.

PE Inclusivity and Wider Opportunities

Pinner Wood School offers a wide range of additional opportunities to enrich physical education beyond curriculum lessons. Children take part in The Pinner Wood Trailblazers (daily mile) and Wake Up and Shake Up sessions, promoting daily physical activity. Lessons also make use of cross-curricular links, school and local grounds, and specialist coaches from the community.

An extensive extra-curricular provision allows children to access further challenge and a variety of sports, including football, netball, swimming, rugby, cricket and gymnastics. Pupils also have opportunities to represent the school in competitions, fostering teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship.

During the 2024–2025 academic year, pupils achieved notable successes across a range of sports. Football teams excelled in inter-school competitions, athletics pupils participated in the Harrow Athletics tournament, and gymnastics competitors secured podium finishes. Running club pupils took part in the London Mini Marathon and Harrow Cross Country events.

Other sporting events and activities at the school have included a partnership with Great Athletes to bring an ex Commonwealth Gymnast to the school and collaboration with Merchant Taylors to learn new hockey skills.
