Art Intent

At Pinner Wood School, our Art curriculum aims to help pupils become confident and creative learners through high quality art lessons. Children explore a range of artists, styles and materials, skills and rich art vocabulary.

Art is inclusive for all pupils at Pinner Wood. Children with SEN and EAL can take part fully without language or literacy barriers and all children can access the lessons. As well as this, lessons are adapted and include clear challenges so that all pupils can succeed, with progress measured through effort, creativity and skill development.

Teaching follows a clear five-lesson structure: learning about artists, experimenting with materials, recreating techniques, creating final pieces and evaluating their work. This approach helps pupils build skills step by step and develop a positive attitude towards art.

Progression in Art

At Pinner Wood School, art skills are carefully developed from EYFS through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. All pupils explore drawing, painting and craft across the school, ensuring a consistent experience, whilst skills become increasingly detailed and refined as pupils move through the years.

In EYFS, children explore materials freely and develop early skills such as mark making and colour awareness. In Key Stage 1, pupils learn to use a range of tools and techniques with more control and purpose. By Key Stage 2, pupils build on these skills by refining techniques, making informed choices about materials and evaluating their work using appropriate art vocabulary, in line with the National Curriculum.

Art Inclusivity and Wider Opportunities

At Pinner Wood School, pupils are given a wide range of opportunities to enrich their learning in the arts. Some of these include:

  • Art club

  • STEAM week

  • Fresh Arts

These all allow pupils to explore creativity beyond the classroom.

  • Dance clubs, Starburst Musical Theatre club, LAMDA

  • Whole school events - Summer Fair performance

  • Harrow Dance Festival

  • Pupil Premium art trip

  • Ongoing collaborations - Carepoint Practice, Northwood

Helping children to take pride in their creativity and feel part of the wider community.

An inclusive art curriculum celebrates diverse cultures, perspectives, and abilities. It is intentionally designed so that inclusion ensures every student feels represented, supported, and empowered to participate in creative expression.
