Languages Intent
The intent of Languages at Pinner Wood is to broaden pupil's horizons, reduce cultural insularity and deepen understanding of the wider world.
Through learning Spanish, pupils are enabled to communicated confidently in another language, both orally and in writing, and to engage meaningfully with other cultures.
The curriculum aims to foster curiosity, cultural appreciation and linguistic competence, while laying strong foundations for future language learning and international opportunities later in life.
Progression in Languages
Language learning is carefully sequenced and progressive across Key Stage 2. Pupils learn one language – Spanish – across the Key Stage, building a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
Knowledge and skills are mapped year-on-year to ensure increasing confidence, accuracy and complexity in language use.
Regular weekly lessons, use of the Language Angels scheme, specialist Spanish teaching and exposure to authentic language through songs, stories and rhymes support steady progression and preparation for further language study in Key Stage 3.
Languages Inclusivity and Wider Opportunities
Pupils benefit from enriched language experiences beyond discrete lessons, including themed language days, cross-curricular links with subjects such as computing and design technology, cultural immersion activities and links with school values.
Opportunities to explore the origins of languages, cook traditional foods, learn songs in multiple languages and engage with whole-school cultural events help pupils use language meaningfully in context and deepen cultural understanding.
