Read Write Inc

At Pinner Wood School our aim is for every child to become a reader. Thus we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get children off to a flying start with their literacy. This is accessed by children in Reception to Year 2. Once children complete the RWI programme, they move to Off Programme learning focusing on Reading Skills.

What is Read Write Inc?

Read, Write Inc. is an integrated approach to teaching phonics, reading, writing, handwriting and spelling. Read, Write Inc. (RWI) is an effective programme in creating confident, fluent readers. In the programme children learn to read by

  1. Reading letters (graphemes) by their ‘sounds’
  2. Blend these sounds into words
  3. Read the words in a story

Each RWI lesson is split into three parts:

  1. A speed sound session to learn to read and write Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds
  2. Reading a story, practising decoding and comprehension skills
  3. Writing task linked closely to the book read that week. These tasks develop vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation

Reading books

Children will read a colour banded book in lessons. This has been assessed at their level. They will be sent home with a matched home reading book.

How does RWI work at Pinner Wood?

Read Write Inc is taught through EYFS and Key Stage 1. All our staff teaching RWI, have received the Ruth Miskin training and continue to have regular training. We pride ourselves on our small group teaching of phonics that ensures that the children have the appropriate level of support. Children are accessed regularly and placed in small teaching groups matching a RWI colour banded book.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn to read fluently
  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk.
  • Learn to read words by blending the sounds together.
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out.
  • Show that they understand the stories by answering ‘Find It’ and ‘Prove it’ discussion questions.

When using RWI to write the children will:

  • Learn to spell
  • Learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent the 44 sounds (graphemes)
  • Learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  • Learn to write simple and then increasingly complex sentences.
  • Compose a range of texts
  • Write simple sentences
  • The ‘sounds’

Children will learn

Fred Talk

During the school day and RWI lessons teachers will use Fred talk to help children to hear sounds and blend. Fred talk is when a word is segmented into its sounds and then the child must blend these sounds and say the word.

For example, F-R-E-D = Fred, P –L- AY = Play

What else can I do to help my child with their reading?

  • You can visit the Ruth Miskin website for further support http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents/
  • Read a variety of books (fiction, non-fiction, rhymes etc).
  • Discuss the different features of various books.
  • Talk about the books and other reading materials that you have shared.
  • Explain the meaning of new words.
  • Most importantly though, show the fun that can be gained by listening to stories and reading a range of texts.e.g. reading and then following a recipe together
  • Don’t forget you don’t have to read just books, cereal packets, shopping lists, road signs, web pages, magazines, newspapers etc are useful ways to practise reading.
