End of Year Round Up

Head teacher's Messages
Dear Families,
As we come to the end of another year at Pinner Wood, we reflect on all we’ve achieved.
There’s truly never a dull day here – there’s always something exciting happening! Staff are constantly finding creative ways to engage children and spark their love of learning – whether through trips, visitors, oracy, clubs, or inspiring classroom lessons. There are so many opportunities on offer, and I hope you feel that too.
On Friday, reports were sent home for children in Nursery to Year 5.
We hope you received these and have had a chance to celebrate your child’s progress this year. Year 6 will come out later today.
A huge thank you to our dedicated and hardworking staff.
They make everything possible and we are so lucky to have them at Pinner Wood– not many schools can say they have a ‘Dance Squad’! (If you came to the fair, you’ll know what I mean.) Wishing our team a happy, restful summer.
A big congratulations to Mr O'Brien and his partner who are expecting their first baby in December.
Also congratulations to Miss Reeves who will be getting married at the start of the summer holidays. She will be returning to school in September as Mrs. Kearney.
We are incredibly lucky to have such a supportive community.
Thank you for all your encouragement and involvement throughout the year.
A huge thank you to the families of Catia and Layla for a your generous donations to our Chromebook project.
In this newsletter, we reflect on our achievements and hear from key members of our team.
We hope to see many of you at our Open Evening tonight – a great opportunity to say goodbye to this year’s teacher and meet the next.
We’ll also be launching our End of Year Survey, which can be accessed via the link or QR code below. All feedback is shared with the team – so if your child has had a great year, let us know! Names are requested in case you'd like to follow up, but remember the SLT will be available at Open Evening to answer any questions.
A reminder that school finishes at 1.30pm on Friday 18th July.
Please ensure your child is collected on time – it’s hard for children to see their friends leave while they wait.
We return on Wednesday 3rd September 2025.
The first few days are key to setting the expectations for the year ahead, so please make sure your child is back. Unfortunately, we can’t authorise holidays at the start of term.
Wishing you a happy, sunny summer with your families.
Kind regards,
Miss Marriott
PS. A set of keys have been found and handed in from the Summer FunFest. If you are missing your keys, please go and see the school office.

Please use the QR code or this link to complete the End of Year Survey. Your support in completing this would be much appreciated.
Stepping Up - Staffing News
Great news – we are fully staffed in the school for September. In the June Summer 2 update I introduced you to our new staff.
Since then...
Mrs Sophie Campbell has been appointed as our new Pastoral Mentor.
Sophie has been part of the Pinner Wood team for some time, working as a Teaching Assistant. Prior to this, she gained valuable experience in nurseries and care settings. During her time here, she has actively sought opportunities to grow into this role – supporting children through challenging times and helping them understand and regulate their emotions.
She’s been a key member of our Rainbows intervention team and is always ready to offer support. In her new role, Sophie will work closely with children and families, run targeted group sessions, be part of our safeguarding team, and liaise with external agencies to ensure the right support is in place.
Outside of school, Sophie is a busy mum of three – with children at various stages of school life. She loves travelling and reading.
We are excited and wish her every success in her new role.

Value of the Half Term - Dream Big

This term, we've focused on Dream Big with Bonnie Bird. The Term started with our Fantastic Careers Day, encouraging children to dream big and consider what is possible. Take a look our for the display of the day in the corridor near the lower hall. All children have made oracy speeches for their reports. They have been reflecting on their achievements and highlights this year. This is also a great way to see how their oracy skills are progressing year on year.
We conclude our Dream Big term tonight with our Open evening showcasing the learning from the year.
Next term our year will start with Choose Kind.

It is great to see attendance improving this term but sad to see it is not as high as previous years. This is mainly due to families taking term time holidays. Please remember we are not able to authorise any holidays in term time. Leave in exceptional circumstances must be applied for in advance.
Please check your child’s attendance on your Arbor App and let us know of any unaccounted attendance by contacting attendance@pinnerwood.co.uk
What we set out to achieve this year ....

How it went ....
Reading remains at the heart of our curriculum, with exciting events and activities throughout the year encouraging a lifelong love of books.
All our staff have now received training in adaptive teaching and we have created our own toolkit, allowing us to tailor lessons to support every learner.
We have successfully launched Google Classroom in Year 6, with Chromebooks being used confidently to support and enhance learning.
Vocabulary development has been a key focus this year. Teachers have developed creative ways to weave rich language into lessons, and our February Lesson Study was dedicated to this area.
Our team continues to adapt maths learning using the White Rose framework, ensuring it meets the needs of all our pupils—this was evident in our recent book looks.
A two-week writing cycle is now embedded across the school and is already having a clear impact on the quality and progress in pupils’ writing.
Behaviour and Attitudes: A Positive Environment
We’ve introduced OPAL Play at lunchtime, which is proving to be a huge success in fostering creative, active and inclusive play.
Our attendance systems have been strengthened, and we’re proud to share that our attendance is now above the national average.
Personal Development: Preparing for the Future
Skills in IT, oracy, and presentation are being developed across the curriculum, giving children the tools they need to succeed in the modern world.
We’ve continued our focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, with staff training and new events added to our calendar to reflect our shared values.
Sustainability is at the core of our ethos, and we continue to find ways to embed it into daily school life and the wider curriculum.
Leadership and Management: Sharing Our Success
Pinner Wood is proud to be an Oracy Hub School. We’ve welcomed over 100 school leaders from across the country to share our best practices.
Our involvement in a collaborative Oracy project with 9 other schools – we helped them develop Oracy in their schools and feedback has been incredibly positive.
We were honoured to host leaders and the CEO of Voice 21, who visited to see our outstanding oracy work in action—helping to put Pinner Wood firmly on the map!
Our Year 6 pupils are pioneering Google tools, using them to manage tasks, collaborate and present their work effectively.
Behind the scenes, we’ve welcomed a new office team, who have been working hard to develop systems and processes to ensure everything runs smoothly-communication is effective and we are working in a limited budget.
Looking ahead, we are excited to launch our ‘Courageous Conversations’ coaching INSET in September 2025 for all staff, supporting a culture of openness and continuous improvement.
We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together this year and are excited by what is to come.
Next year’s plans already include:
Launching Chrome books/ Google to Year 5 (funding dependant)
Remodelling our PSHE curriculum to make it more relevant to today’s learners and linked to values
Looking at how information is shared in Year 5/6 and launching Learner Profiles
Looking at ways that we can include more opportunities for Writing across the curriculum.
Teaching Spanish in Years 3,4,5 and 6
Establishing our first ever Pastoral Mentor
Thank you for your ongoing support, enthusiasm and partnership. Together, we continue to make Pinner Wood a place where every child can thrive.

A Round up from our Leaders
Staff Member | Update on area |
Inclusion – Mrs Bretayne | We are delighted to share some exciting developments in our SEND provision here at Pinner Wood. Over the past year, we have continued to build on the success of our Acorn Centre—our dedicated SEN resource base for children with moderate learning difficulties. The two classes, Hedgehogs and Squirrels, benefit from different pathways and a bespoke curriculum while also accessing parts of mainstream provision where appropriate. This blended model ensures that each child receives the right balance of support, challenge and inclusion. Our Acorn Centre is now at full capacity and is expected to remain so for the next two years, reflecting both the increasing demand for specialist places and the strength of our provision. Across the school we have also been focusing on making teaching more adaptive. Following training led by our attached Educational Psychologist and internal Inclusion Team, staff have written a Pinner Wood Adaptive teaching Toolkit and are using adaptive teaching strategies in all classrooms. This approach moves us away from relying heavily on 1:1 support or traditional differentiation. Instead, teachers are planning responsively and flexibly to meet the needs of all learners within whole-class teaching—ensuring every child can access learning and feel successful alongside their peers. |
Sporting News Mr O’Brien | Another term completed, and this has been the one where we’ve seen the success of Physical Education come to fruition at Pinner Wood School. The children have worked hard throughout the term, learning a range of different skills in athletics and dance. Sports Day took place this summer term, and it was hugely rewarding to see all the children taking part and enjoying themselves — the smiles on their faces said it all. Another highlight was our Dance Showcase during the Summer FunFest. Watching both the children and teachers perform really showed just how talented we all are at Pinner Wood! A huge thank you to Be Active for these ongoing support with our PE lessons, teaching and after school clubs this term. We are so excited to be hosting a Be Active Summer Camp here at Pinner Wood during the holidays! I’d like to end with some very exciting news: I’m proud to say that Pinner Wood has achieved the Gold School Games Mark for the first time! It’s a brilliant achievement and a reflection of the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. |
Music News Mrs Stephenson and Mrs Kraft | This year, music at our school has truly found its own pulse – a steady, joyful rhythm of regular singing assemblies, pupils performing in whole school assemblies and a listening focus throughout the classrooms. Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Kraft and our talented teaching team, regular curriculum lessons have formed the heartbeat of our musical development. Layered over this were bursts of syncopated excitement, as special musical events and trips brought variety, energy, and inspiration, such as a trip to the Barbican, The Mozartists workshop and the Percussion Project. As we moved through the year, the tempo built to a thrilling crescendo in the summer term. From the lively atmosphere of Pinner Woodstock to the polished performances at our End of Year Instrumental Concert, our pupils have shown just how far they’ve come – not only in skill, but in confidence, collaboration, and creativity. It has been a truly harmonious year, and we couldn’t be prouder. In 2024-25 these activities took place in addition to the weekly music lessons: Harrow Music Service (HMS) performances and workshops (including String Fest, Guitar Fest, Piano Fest, Band Fest, Choir Showcase, Song Fest and a Percussion Workshop) Whole School Live Performances A Winter concert by the Harrow Music Service Musicians Electric Umbrella performance Specific Year Group opportunities Percussion Project – whole class instrumental lessons and performance The Mozartists Workshop London Symphony Orchestra trip to the Barbican for ‘The Lost Thing’ Performances St Edmunds Christmas Concert Singing at the turning on of the Christmas Lights in Pinner Pinner Woodstock Instrumental Concert – end of year showcase Assembly Performers – termly timetable A chance for every pupil to perform in Assembly (Mondays and Fridays) Orchestra, Choir and Band – weekly practice Song Assembly – weekly Instrumental Tuition Whole classes learn instruments in their weekly music lessons from Year 2, with recorder. This enables the pupils to learn the stave, music vocabulary and elements of notation. In Years 4 and 5 the pupils learn the Ukulele, adding a stringed instrument to their skillset. The HMS peripatetic tutors offer a wide range of instruments to our pupils including brass, wind, drums, strings, tabla and keyboard. A Listening Focus An in-class focus on music from a particular period of history (e.g. baroque) which moves though the timeline to the modern day during the academic year. This is embedded within the school so that by the time the pupils reach Year 6 they have a solid grounding of musical literacy and an appreciation of a range of instruments, styles and genres. In Spring 2025 Pinner Wood was awarded the Music Mark following nomination from the Harrow Music Service in recognition of our excellent Music Education. Next steps for Nurturing Musical Creativity Outdoor instruments are now being enjoyed in the playground as part of the OPAL project, with huge thanks to Pinner Rotary for funding and the site team for creating the area. These instruments are giving pupils the chance to play and improvise together every day. An increasing number of the pupils from the Hedgehog and Squirrel classes are joining their weekly class music lessons and now also have access to more outdoor and classroom instruments. Their class teachers have received music training and the pupils have music composition programmes on their ipads. We aim to further develop the Music opportunities for our pupils with Special Needs. Teachers received CPD this year on composition programmes and Pinner Wood aims to build capacity for improvisation and composition over the coming years. |
Curriculum and Sustainability Miss Reeves | Another busy year done! It continues to amaze me just how much extra fun we are able to fit into our timetable at Pinner Wood. The trips, events, visitors, clubs, theme weeks and special days go hand in hand with our exciting and ambitious curriculum. Some highlights for me this year have been; working with Be Active to uplevel our PE provision, hugely successful STEAM week and Sustainability Week, parent workshops on writing, RWI and Maths, our improved dance curriculum, taking some of our pupils to the BETT show in London, the amazing showcase and showstoppers to start and end our foundation topics, Girls football events, a number of trips using public transport or walking and a huge amount of learning being taken outdoors. In Sustainability news, it has been another successful year where Sustainability really is at the core of our ethos. From Picker Pals, outdoor learning, walk to school weeks, active travel training, parking patrols, change speeches, sustainability training, classroom energy monitors, recycling systems set up in the school and scooters embedded in Opal play. Alongside this it has been a busy year of awards with our TFL accreditation moving towards Gold, receiving the Green Flag Eco School award with distinction, Woodland Trust award at Platinum level, RHS Level 1 - 5, Plastic clever funding and funding for new scooter parking! We can't forget to mention our successful Eco Refill shop that has been opening monthly this year and has already saved over 100 bottles from waste! I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all our amazing volunteers who give up their time to come and support our children with their learning. We really appreciate all your help. |
Pastoral/ attendance/ Opal play headlines Mr Mainwaring | This year, Pinner Wood School has witnessed notable growth in our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) play programme, despite facing some challenges due to the absence of a designated play coordinator. We are incredibly grateful to Ms. Ellis for stepping up to lead our lunchtime staff, ensuring that our play initiatives continue to thrive. We have successfully acquired a storage unit for our lunchtime resources, allowing us to organise and manage new materials effectively. This year, we introduced exciting activities such as tree climbing, dress-up for Key Stage 1 children, and the use of pallets and crates for construction play. The transformation of our 3/4 playground has been remarkable, evolving from a storage area into a more inviting space, with three of our containers creatively spray-painted to designate the OPAL/PE shed, PTA shed and our school storage shed which highlighting our values. Our partnership with the Pinner Rotary Club has been instrumental in enhancing our lunchtime provision, as they sponsored the acquisition of a sustainable junkyard music garden. This initiative coincided with our efforts to develop the 3/4 grass area, where we planted eight new trees. Looking ahead, we have exciting plans for next year, including creating houses from pallets, introducing a mud kitchen and wellie library for the winter term, and installing rope swings in the Year 6 playground. Our children have continued to assess risks and express creativity in their play, sharing their ideas with the school council to help shape future developments. This year, we have also been focused on enhancing the lunchtime dining experience, aiming to slow down the process so children can enjoy their time in the dining hall. The introduction of calming music and grouping children by year group has already improved this experience. A big thank you to the lunch hall staff for their hard work and efforts in trying to develop the experience. During the year we have experienced a lot of change with our head chef, Linda Dawson retiring and Aaron Ross temporarily stepping in. We would like to thank him for his leadership and communication and all the Pabulum staff for their flexibility and efforts. Next year, we plan to implement an ordering system that allows parents to select their children's meals for the week, which should help reduce food waste and further enhance the dining experience for our children. |
DEI Headlines Mr Mainwaring | This year, Pinner Wood School has made significant strides in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within our community. Our annual Community Evening in September was a resounding success, held in the school garden and well-attended by families and community members, providing an opportunity for families to mingle and share their culture. In October, we celebrated Black History Month, with each year group focusing on notable Black British figures and their contributions across various fields, enriching our children's understanding of important historical contexts. Our annual Iftar evening continues to grow in popularity, becoming bigger and better each year, fostering understanding and respect for different cultures as families come together to break their fast and learn about Ramadan. Additionally, we marked our inaugural Garba event, organised by the Friends of Pinner Wood, which brought families together to enjoy music, dance, and community spirit. During our "Heart of the Community" half-term, we celebrated individuality with BEE You Day, where children came dressed in cultural clothing, promoting self-esteem and pride in their identities - collaborating with our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) lead, we highlighted the importance of code-switching and the value of diverse communication styles. At Pinner Wood we continue develop and improve - our staff engaged in professional development with our second year of Hemispheres Education, focusing on unconscious bias through the lens of South Asian children, equipping our teachers with essential tools for creating a more inclusive learning environment. We will continue to reflect on what we have learnt in the Autumn term and engage with more learning in our third and final year through a new lens. We concluded the year with a 'Peer Review'. This a process of inviting other schools to observe our EDI practises - it involved discussions with myself and Miss Hazlewood, lesson observations, visits to our ARMS (Additional Resource in a Mainstream Setting), and conversations with children and parents. The overwhelmingly positive feedback provided valuable insights for our next steps in enhancing EDI at Pinner Wood, reinforcing our commitment to making every child feel valued and represented in our welcoming and inclusive environment. |
Oracy Updates Miss Thomas | It is an exciting time for Oracy nationally and Pinner Wood are at the heart of the Oracy movement. This year, we have opened our doors to over 100 educators from accross the country who have wanted to learn more about Oracy practice and embedding it within their own settings. From January - July, we also ran a research project, where 9 schools took part, each developing their own area of Oracy including homework, discussion guidelines, partner talk and oracy assemblies. We have been inundated with requests for further projects and visits and this is something we are excited to continue with next academic year. In July, I was invited to attend Celebrating Excellence event at the University of Cambridge where I met a number of like minded professionals who are also experts in Oracy. We are excited to collaborate with more people and continue to develop and extend our own Oracy provision even further. At Pinner Wood, we have been refining our speech making curriculum and are starting to develop this further. In addition, Miss Hazlewood and I have spent time looking at the Oracy curriculum for the Acorns Centre. She has implemented some innovative approaches in order to develop the children's communication and language skills. |
School Business Matters Mrs Tong | As we get closer to the end of the academic year, there is lots going on behind the scenes to get everything ready for September. The office team has been busy welcoming our new Nursery and Reception children, supporting events, trips and the residentials. The site team has been working hard to ensure all the events ran smoothly. Our final event will be the Year 6 leavers’ breakfast, where we will say farewell and good luck to our oldest pupils as they move on to secondary school. It has been a busy time – but we are nearly there! |

Dreaming Big - A Message from our Chair of Governors
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of a very busy summer term, I’d like to take a moment to thank the whole Pinner Wood community for another vibrant and inspiring few months.
The Governing Body has had the privilege of seeing some excellent work across the school—in writing, computing, early years, oracy, and outdoor learning. It’s clear how much thought and care goes into every area of the curriculum.
This term has been packed with enriching experiences—from school trips in every year group, to the fantastic Year 5 and Year 6 residentials. Year 6 impressed us with their Business Challenge and their brilliant performance of The Wicked Wizard of Oz, and we know they’ll carry their confidence and creativity with them to secondary school. A heartfelt farewell to them all—they will always be part of the Pinner Wood family.
A big thank you to the Friends of Pinner Wood for the wonderful Summer Fun Fest. The time and effort that goes into organising events like this is hugely appreciated and really brings our school community together.
We wish all children the very best as they move into their new year groups, ready to take on new challenges and adventures.
Have a restful and happy summer.
Regards,
Tuli Palit
